MEDIA ALERT | 24 May 202
Palliative Care Tasmania Limited (PCT) and The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation Tasmanian Branch (ANMF) will be using Palliative Care Week this year (Sunday 23 May to Saturday 29 May) to highlight the amazing services and people who work in palliative care in Tasmania.
“This week is a wonderful opportunity to raise awareness about palliative care as well as recognise our amazing and dedicated palliative care nurses who work tirelessly to support their clients. It is also a great opportunity to encourage palliative care nursing as a career pathway said ANMF Tasmanian Branch Secretary, Emily Shepherd.
The positive impact that palliative care can have on a person with a life limiting illness is profound, which is why it is such a rewarding career pathway for many who choose to work delivering palliative care and services.
This year PCT have partnered with ANMF to deliver education scholarships to support those nurses with a passion for palliative care. A cornerstone of these scholarships will be to increase diversity within the sector and build the existing palliative care workforce.
“It’s really important that our palliative care workforce reflects our diverse communities. We need more palliative care nurses across the State. However, we particularly need Aboriginal, and culturally and linguistically diverse nurses in palliative care,” said Colleen Johnstone, PCT CEO.
These scholarships form part of the state-wide Strengthening Communities of Care (Workforce) Strategy being led by PCT and funded by the Tasmanian Government.
“We are thrilled to be partnering with the ANMF on this important initiative and look forward to welcoming new nurses to the palliative care sector,” said Ms Johnstone.
The partnership is being launched as part of National Palliative Care Week, with a range of other activities planned to celebrate the dedication of the workforce (both paid and unpaid), as well as community education events about palliative care and end of life care.
