State of Palliative Care Reports - Tasmania

With support from the Tasmanian Government, Palliative Care Tasmania (PCT) released the inaugural State of Palliative Care Report in 2021. The report provided the first comprehensive overview of palliative care demand, service delivery and workforce capability across Tasmania.

In 2023–24, PCT partnered with the University of Tasmania to develop an updated report, strengthening the evidence base and establishing clearer, replicable measures to track progress across the sector over time.

Evidence in Tasmania and nationally shows that current demand for palliative care services is not being fully met. As Tasmania’s population ages and the number of people living with complex and life-limiting illness increases, demand for palliative care is projected to grow significantly.

Understanding the current workforce, service capacity and system gaps is essential to planning for the future. The State of Palliative Care Report provides critical insights to support policy development, workforce planning and sustainable investment in services that support Tasmanians living with life-limiting illness, approaching the end of life, and those who are grieving.
