Dying for Beginners

Dying for beginners – a video for everyone

Facing the unknown can be daunting and perhaps nowhere more so than when it comes to death. But understanding the process can make it far less frightening.

With more than two decades of experience as a palliative care doctor and friend of Palliative Care Tasmania, Dr. Kathryn Mannix has spent her career supporting people and families through the final chapter of life. In collaboration with animator Emily Downe, she has created a thoughtful and beautifully illustrated video that offers a gentle, honest glimpse into what the natural process of dying often looks like, helping to replace fear with clarity and compassion.

We celebrate and prepare for the beginning of life, yet so often we are left uncertain and unready for how life concludes. In healthcare, every doctor is trained to assist at a birth, but far fewer learn how to recognise, support, and accompany the natural process of dying.

That’s why voices like Dr. Mannix’s are so important. A dedicated palliative care specialist and gifted communicator, she has made it her life’s work to guide us in understanding death not as a medical failure, but as a natural event. We are proud to feature her work.

Her animated guide is a beautiful, essential resource for anyone seeking to understand what happens when we die.
