Community Project - Gift of Comfort

At Peacock One, kindness and quality care are at the centre of everything the team does. Located on Davey Street in Hobart, the ward supports two equally important areas of care, geriatric rehabilitation and palliative care. Together, the team helps older patients regain strength and independence while also providing gentle, dignified care for those nearing the end of life.

Every day, the staff at Peacock One Palliative Care Unit see how much comfort can come from the simplest things. A warm quilt folded at the end of the bed. The soft glow of a bedside lamp. The calming scent of lavender in the air. These small details bring peace and warmth to the people they care for, reminding everyone who visits that thoughtfulness lives in every corner of the ward.

While the care is always full of compassion, the rooms themselves can still feel clinical. This project is aimed at converting these rooms to be more gentle, peaceful and welcoming, a place where patients and families can find calm during one of life’s most tender times.

About the Project “Gift of Comfort”

Palliative Care Tasmania is proud to walk alongside the caring team at Peacock One to help make that dream a reality. Together, we are working to bring a sense of warmth and humanity into every room through small, meaningful comforts that can make a world of difference.

The idea is simple. When someone is admitted to palliative care, we want to bring in a small set of comfort items that soften the space and lift the spirit. These touches do not just change the look of a room, they change how it feels. They offer peace to families, strength to staff, and a gentle reminder that kindness still surrounds us all.

A homely quilt brings warmth and softness to a hospital room, helping it feel more like home. The gentle textures and calming colours offer comfort not only to patients but also to families spending time by their side. Each quilt becomes a quiet reminder that care and kindness can be found in the smallest details.

A gentle scent can completely change the feeling of a room. Aromatherapy diffusers help create a calm and peaceful atmosphere for patients and families, supporting relaxation and easing stress. The light aroma also helps staff and visitors feel at ease, adding a sense of calm to the space.

The smallest items can often bring the greatest comfort. Simple toiletries such as hand creams, shampoos and conditioners help patients feel refreshed and cared for. These small personal touches make a hospital stay feel more homely and dignified, especially for those who may not have family nearby to provide such essentials.

Soft lighting can completely change the mood of a room. Touch lamps provide gentle, adjustable light that helps create a calm and comforting atmosphere for patients and families, especially during evening and overnight care. They are also practical, allowing staff to adjust lighting quietly without disturbing rest.

Pyjama tops & trousers bring comfort, warmth and a sense of normality to those spending their final days in care. The right fabric and fit can make all the difference, helping patients feel relaxed and dignified.

Soft, comfortable nightgowns help patients feel relaxed and cared for during their stay. They offer ease of movement, warmth and dignity, while bringing a small sense of comfort that feels closer to home.
